Use black soldier fly to replace soybean meal in eggs breeding
Poultry are insectivores and feed on a variety of insects found in nature. Among the different farmed insects allowed in the EU for feeding poultry, the black soldier fly (BSF) stands out for its dense source of crude protein, metabolizable energy, calcium and phosphorus, and its ability to sequester most organic waste such as household food scraps and livestock manure) into a rich source of essential amino acids, enabling the recovery of large quantities of residues. Currently, the main protein source used in layer feed is soybean meal. However, using soybean meal comes with issues such as deforestation, high carbon footprint and its origin from genetically modified seeds. The study found that soybean meal in the diet of free-range laying hens can be completely replaced by black soldier fly powder without affecting the egg production rate, feed intake or feed conversion rate of the laying hens.
