Black soldier fly larvae, a small body that packs a big punch
BSFL plays an important role in organic waste management and valorization of various biodegradable wastes. Larval biomass produced by bioconversion of organic waste is found to be an excellent source of fats/oils as well as protein and is increasingly used in animal feeding, biodiesel production, biopolymers (chitin) and soil composting, etc. Multiple industries. Whole or processed BSF larvae or pupae can be incorporated into the diets of poultry, fish, pets and pigs as a potential replacement for common feed ingredients (i.e. soy and fish-based meals). As a result, commonly used feed ingredients that insect products can replace can be retained for other uses, including human consumption, thus contributing to food security. Additionally, the bioactive chemicals present in BSFL, such as antimicrobial peptides, can also add great benefits to animal diets.
